Shure has built an excellent reputation in audio hardware aimed a professional musicians. The company recently expanded its range of earphones to cater for iPhone and iPod users who appreciate audio fidelity but whose budget doesn't extend to paying £150 for a pair of earbuds.

Shure's latest are these SE115 earphones which come in blue, pink, black and red. They're more expensive than its SE102 earphones (see MacUser, 24 October 2008, p32), but still less than you would expect to pay for the highest quality in-ear headphones. The SE115s incorporate the second generation of Shure's Dynamic Microspeaker, which aims to deliver warm tones and enhanced bass. The sound isolation technology ensures that outside distractions are kept to a minimum.

The SE115s fit into your ear in a way that means you have to loop the cable up and over your ears. This means the cable can wrap round the back of your head, keeping it neat, but it also means the earphones can be fiddly to fit. In addition, like lots of other earphones, they come with a short cable and an extension cable. However, in this case, the cable is too short to be useful and you'll need the extension cable in all circumstances. There are also five extra pairs of ear cushions of different sizes.

We were very impressed with the audio quality from the SE115s. Treble and mid ranges were bright and crisp, with lots of presence, and the bass was hefty without being overpowering.

You may baulk at paying the thick end of £100 for a pair of earphones. If you do, then these are not for you, but if you want a pair of in-ear earphones that really do justice to the tracks on your iPod, then these are worthy of consideration. Our only complaint is that they do take a bit of time to fit properly and that the extension cable is a necessity.

Verdict

These Shure earphones sound fantastic and block outside noise effectively. If you have the budget and don't mind the way they fit, they are an excellent buy.
