Luna Voyager Inverness

Xtreme Mac's Luna Voyager iPhone alarm clock resembles the kind of clock radio that adorned the bedside table of every self-respecting 1970s bedroom. It's far smaller and lighter than most other iPod/iPhone bedside speaker docks, and with good reason: it's designed to be portable.

You'll no longer need to rely on the hotel's wake up call or your iPhone's speaker, stick one of these in your bag and you can wake up to your favourite tunes blaring in your ear. The Luna Voyager's clock automatically picks up the time settings from your iPhone and uses those. Alternatively, you can choose to set the time manually. Setting the alarm on the Voyager is done through a click wheel on top of the device. The only buttons on the Voyager, on either side of the wheel, are one for manually setting the clock, which doubles as a play/pause button for the iPhone, and one for setting the alarm. And, of course, when your iPhone is connected, it charges through the Dock connector.

You can elect to awaken to the clock's buzzer, or to music on your iPhone. To enable the latter, you must create a playlist called Luna in iTunes and sync it with your phone.

We liked the sleek elegance of the Luna Voyager, and the lack of potentially confusing settings buttons is definitely a plus. The all-important snooze setting is controlled through the click wheel, and its big enough that you'll find it first time no matter how sleepy you are. However, you have to rotate it, rather than push it, which could be confusing when you are half-awake. The clock itself is big and clear, and easy to read without being so bright it lights up the room when you put the lights out. If you do find the default setting too bright, it can be adjusted using the wheel.

Audio quality is reasonable. It definitely lacks bass and presence, but as a portable solution, it's fine. And if you'd rather connect an iPod shuffle or another audio player altogether, you can, using the line-in jack on the back of the Luna Voyager, though you'll have to set the alarm manually.

Our only real complaint is that it doesn't, unlike those 1970s bedside boxes, have a radio. That's understandable from the point of view of saving space and keeping it simple, but we miss the flexibility of being able to wake up to the radio instead of our iPhone.

That aside, this is a neat and reasonably priced portable iPhone alarm clock.

Verdict

The audio quality isn't great, but the Luna Voyager is small and light enough to pack in an overnight bag.
