Alfa Romeo MiTo

The Alfa Romeo MiTo line-up has been given a breath of fresh air, with a brand new engine.

Badged MultiAir, the 1.4-litre turbo unit ditches its camshaft and valves in favour of four pairs of electronically controlled hydraulic actuators.

These can be switched on or off, depending on how much power you want.

The result is effectively an electronic version of Honda’s acclaimed VTEC variable valve timing system.

On paper, the improvements over the standard 1.4 T-Jet unit are clear.

Power and torque are increased, yet at the same time the engine promises greater efficiency and lower emissions.

We drove the 135bhp car – set to be the best seller – and noticed the difference in throttle response instantly.

The MiTo reacts more quickly, and covers 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds.

MultiAir models also benefit from stop-start and a gearshift indicator. These features work with the more efficient engine to help reduce fuel bills.

Dynamically, this MiTo is no different from the regular car.

Its DNA system gives a choice of settings for the chassis, but whichever you choose the car is poised in corners.

Plus, the character on which the Alfa sells isn’t diminished. It’s just faster and cheaper to run.

Rival: VW Polo 1.4 TSI

Packing a zesty turbo and supercharged engine, latest Polo gets a ‘baby Golf’ look, and blends strong performance with impressive efficiency.
